The religion that a politician claims as their own has little to do with how they will behave in office. Nixon was a Quaker. It shouldn’t even be a consideration. Santorum’s Catholicism has a concrete effect on his anti–abortion anti-gay rhetoric, but even if there were no constitutional barriers to making laws on the basis of religion, a politician will generally act in their own interest once elected.
The characterizations of Obama as a radical leftist or a Muslim are laughable, whatever he believes in, his actual policies are typical pro-corporate, pro-war ,mainstream, center right. The few in his “progressive” base that still support him point to his stance on LGBT issue and reproductive rights. Polticians use issues of culture and religion to distract from their furtherance of the elite’s agenda, which continues unimpeded without regard to which party appears to be in control.
The late sociologist and composer Frank Zappa predicted the coming of a “fascist theocracy” to America, as did Ron Paul with his infamous H.L. Mencken quote about fascism coming “wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross…” and Ron Paul is a Christian. However he stops short of believing that his religious beliefs are grounds for changing the constitution.
If Jesus were to return today, he would be immediately condemned as a radical anarcho-communist, and crucified by the “Christian Right.”
